-mails, conversations during the debate. twitterverse, republicans very happy, including the top team around mitt romney. liberals complaining about the president's performance. without a doubt, participating in republican primary debates helped mitt romney, the president was rusty. hasn't done this in four years. that's not an excuse as james said earlier. the obama campaign says that mitt romney doesn't care about your job or your community. we didn't hear anything like that from the president. romney at least held his own on the big questions of the economy and role of government. if you are the challenger and hold your own, you walk off the stage happy. >> critics of the president say he's two proffesorial. i think they'll say that tonight. >> and more. we have a horse race. mitt romney's performance was head and shoulders than anything we've seen before. >> you think this was his best debate? >> he drove this debate far more than anyone else imagined. mitt romney seized upon the opportunity and set the standard for it i think the president -- i didn't think he was rusty, as i don't think anybody ha

and counting until the presidential debate tonight. mitt romney, he is gaining in two swing states. could this be romney's springboard? romney has whittled the president's lead, take a look. he's whittled the president's lead in the two percentage points in virginia. this is according to a poll released today by marist college, the wall street journal and also nbc news. two-point lead for obama, that's down five points last month. keep in mind we're talking virginia, that's 13 electoral votes there. and check it out, similar story for you in florida. 29 electoral votes there. now, a one-point, one-point lead for obama, down from four points in september. we should mention here that poll shows the president still with the seven-point lead in ohio. we can't forget about ohio. but speaking nationwide here, the president's lead, in our cnn poll of polls, you can see it here, stands at 3 percentage points, unchanged. as we noticed today, kind of interesting, the president has gained one point and romney dropped one point. this is the gallup national tracking poll. obama with a six-point lead t

. it's good news for mitt romney. he did get a debate bounce. brand-new polls show the two candidates in a dead-heat at 47%. romney, reracing the gap. paul steinhauser joins us from washington. these are new. break them down for us? >> let's go back to the screen you were showing. when are we going to see polls? here we go. go back to the screen you had up there. you see what gallup did. those are the numbers on the three days prior to the presidential debate. on the right, the numbers on the three days after the debate. this is the first real nonpartisan live operator national poll we've seen since the debate on wednesday in denver. a five-point advantage for the president before the debate. and dead-heat after. gallup is a seven-day tracking poll. add it together and you saw the president with a 49%-46% advantage. that's within the sampling error. two other things, this is among registered voters, not of likely voters. most polling has moved to the likely voter model, which is narrower. go to the next screen. i want to show you. gallup, like a bunch of debate watchers. ours was the

fired up and really calling mitt romney on what he saw smas of his inconsistencies during the debate. the problem is 67 million-plus people watched that debate. that was really the place where he needed to call mitt romney out. i guarantee you not that many people saw his comments from yesterday. even close to the dab. >> nowhere near that amount. brianna keilar. let me ask you a quick question about the jobs numbers. we are expecting those at 8:30. it might be the most watched job numbers before the election, i would guess. >> that's right. we are watching them and remember they also come out that friday before the election. so we will be watching that as well. this is number two and then number one will be right before the election. we are not expecting this to be good for president obama. these aren't expected to be great jobs numbers. it is unclear how good they would be for mitt romney if they are significantly worse than expected, then obviously that's going to play to mitt romney's favor. the obama campaign, as they said all along, soledad, don't look at the individual number.
